July 9, 2025 by avernos
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Dreadball 2 by Gaiseric08
We're kicking off this week with a moowhosive project inspired by the talk about Dreadball Allstars and a perfect project for the Spring Clean Challenge as Gaiseric gets stuck into finishing off his teams from Dreadball 2nd edition.
Being a big fan of Dreadball myself, and as I'm just getting stuck into refreshing my own teams, I was incredibly excited to see another Dreadball project in here, and Gaiseric has been doing some great work of finding themes to inspire his teams. The Yindij team is a great example of this, based on an armoured Na'avi from Avatar the team has a striking look and thematically they work well as a forest-dwelling alien race.
Reduce, Recycle, Reuse! With the Revenant Cyborgs, Gaiseric has leaned into the Borg feel of various races being assimilated into one team. But to add some spot colours as befitting a sports team they've also gone with a touch of Planetfall. This has allowed the introduction of oranges stippled onto the armour to get a rusted, weathered and worn feel to the team. Add to that the striking red and blue for eyes and you end up with a great looking team of monsters!
Voices from the box Elmer and Dobbs are both commentators and a card holder for the game, totally unnecessary and a great addition to the game. As a feature piece, Gaseric has spent more time in getting the faces to really pop, and it shows. Throughout the project, you get a detailed breakdown of the paints used and the techniques applied to help replicate them for your own teams, and this is what I love about the project system the ability to leave a reference for yourself and at the same time be a tutorial for others.
The Zurad (MSP 04a) by Nightrunner
didn't fancy an army, but a diorama...
For Nightrunner this diorama is all about the Zurad and, the first thing to do is to take the kit and start to super-detail it, layers of plasticard and riveting has been added to the kit to turn it from the Zaku into a fictional "paperpanzer" the Zurad. A lot of care and attention has been taken to upgrade the kit, subtly modify it and then engrave extra details where needed. It's a real tribute to the modelmaker's art.
This GM Suit is having a nap after a long day of moving in a quick anime way. In stark contrast to the Zurad the headless mech isn't getting any extra detailing, it's there as a feature piece and to tell the story so Nightrunner has decided not to detract attention from the Zurad and is keeping it as box standard. Infact I think more work has been put into detailing the interior that you can't even see than into the downed battlesuit.
Currently the diorama is done barring the finishing touches of the painted Zurad, so my goal is for people to get in there to the project and keep tabs on it for the finished piece to be added. My favourite part are the bricks...and I suppose everything else that Nightrunner has done as well, it's a really great example of simple modelling techniques that everyone can do you just need to take the time to give it a whirl and I hope this inspires some viewers to give it a go themselves.
The Fall Of Arnor by elessar2590
The final project is for Ben, who's gone on holiday and so I'm doing this out of badness. Elessar has been working on a 2000 point army for the War of the Ring based on the Fall of Arnor and has sourced his figures from Medbury miniatures range of 3D prints.
The welcome pack from Medbury has five hobbitish archers, it's amazing what you can get for free isn't it! These have been turned into an auxiliary force of bowmen marching to war with the king of Arnor. Three companies of the bootless bowmen are included in the force, that's three bases or twenty-four figures to you and I, and they really look the part as a military force and not just press ganged fighters as is so often the case with halflings in games.
The paint pallet is very limited and that helps speed up the painting and give a striking uniform look to the force. The pure with on the gambeson and the helmet roll helps them to stand out as ranked troops and not some stealthy ranger types. With being frontline troops and not scouts for once it's important to keep your head down in battle, so it helps to be pre-ducked!
An intriguing part of this project has been the digital kitbashing as we can see above, the beard, feathers and fur have all been added to the Hearthguard model to create Argadir and this is something akin to witchcraft, maybe we'll get some information on how to do that in a future project. Overall though Elessar has done an amazing job in a few short months to get cavalry and hobbitry ready along with several of the characters, we just have to wait to see the remaining bulk of the infantry done when he returns to it, and hopefully he doesn't get too distracted by the hints he's dropped in the project about his next plans!
What Are You Painting Right Now?
Every week, we’re absolutely blown away by the incredible topics that are put into the Projects; it’s getting more difficult to choose Community Spotlights! We love your work and we hope to see a lot more of it in the future!
If you fancy getting your hobby fingers out and showing off your newest paint job, terrain piece or even greatest gaming achievement, we want to know about it! We don’t mind if you’re a newcomer to painting or a veteran of the brush, everything you do inspires us to create more and more content together!
