Community Spotlight: Wars Of The Roses, An Ork Waaagh & A Mordheim Mega Fan
July 30, 2025 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Wars of the Roses by SirHumphreyRtd
We start with SirHumphreyRtd who, much like the rest of us, sort of fell into a new period of warfare on the tabletop after being curious about a supplement and set of rules. So this Wars of the Roses project was started after they got "forced" into playing as the Yorkists in their games of Hail Caesar using the Medieval supplement.
Much like many Historical wargaming projects, this particular endeavour came together thanks to a bit of research. SirHumphreyRtd had to learn about which nobles might have been fighting during this period in the area where they live and so they turned to the Stanleys and specifically, Baron Sir Thomas Stanley King of Mann and Sir William Stanley.
I'm already liking the way that this project is going and it just goes to show how awesomely out of hand something can get once you get enamoured with it. With all of that said, SirHumphreyRtd began their journey into painting up the Stanley and their soldiers so they could be thrown into a battle or two.
After a bit of planning (all of which you can read in the Project), this ended up turning into a great project where a full division has been finished and even ended up heading out onto the battlefield to take part in a Wars of the Roses campaign.
They might have been technically fighting under a different flag but it's always great to see the miniatures you've painted on the tabletop in the midst of the action. As well as being a great project packed with ideas for building your Wars of the Roses armies, it also contains some helpful tips on how to build your bases to match your games, especially when you want to nail down a definitive way of doing things amongst you and your friends.
Ork Crusade Army by chaosgorka
Sticking with the idea of narratively driven painting endeavours, chaosgorka is back within the world of Warhammer 40,000 and recently began work on a set of Orks for their new Crusade campaign they are playing.
chaosgorka wouldn't normally start with a special character leading the way for a narrative force but since it has been set on Armageddon, it felt right to include some epic characters. With that in mind, Snikrot got painted up as a great entry point into this project and he's looking awesome. I really like the way chaosgorka paints, using lots of bright colours (even on Grimdark figures) so you can really see what's what.
You can't run Orks without loads of Boyz and so that is where chaosgorka has turned their attention next.
The skin looks great and I think the really bright red is a perfect colour to tie the entire army together. chaosgorka also manages to do superb work on the metallic here, giving them a realistically rusty and dangerous look.
I think more people should dive into narrative games, especially if you've got friends nearby who all enjoy playing games regularly. If you can set up a weekly meet to play games or perhaps make sure you give yourself a big weekend to play loads of games, they can be very rewarding and allow you to tell your own stories within wargaming worlds without having to stick to the rigid feel of some matched play systems. I can't wait to see where this project goes as the Ork army grows.
Mordheim Mega Fan by Scarhandpainting
Last but not least, we have something a bit different. scarhandpainting is something of a mega fan of Mordheim and rather than just paint miniatures, they also have opted to paint themselves, bringing some of the gorgeous art from this brilliant game to their own body in the form of tattoos!
Born out of a love of the game that they dove deep into back in 1999 and (as you can see) throughout the rest of their life, a tattoo dedicated to Mordheim and it's Grimdark awesomeness was inevitable. One such tattoo did get done "back in the day" and the story of how that came about is well worth reading in the project.
Now, with a bit more money and some freedom to go that extra step, scarhandpainting has started getting some more ink done to celebrate their love of the game.
scarhandpainting is hoping to become one with the City of the Damned and it certainly seems like that is starting to become the case! The badass Bertha Bestraufrung joins the collection and it looks like plenty of even more zealous individuals are going to become permanent additions to scarhandpainting's collection.
This is some dedication and if you were going to show your love for a game, Mordheim feels like the one to aim for. It also helps that scarhandpainting is something of a fan of Black Metal as well so it all matches up very nicely! Maybe this could inspire some other folks to have a pop at getting a tattoo done to celebrate their favourite wargame?
I still want to get the Doors of Durin tattooed on my arm but I never get around to it. Maybe this could give me the push...
