Community Spotlight: Ganger Glow-Ups, Voidfighters & Tribal Barbarians
August 13, 2025 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Necromunda Gangers by TrojanTurps
We start off this week's Community Spotlight with some excellent new miniatures from a Sci-Fi project by TrojanTurps. They have put together a great project delving back into Necromunda and playing games using the old rules from back in 1995. This custom, cooperative game saw Gangers going up against Tyranids.
What came out of this project was showcased most recently and that was that some of the miniatures needed a serious glow-up. These miniatures were slotted into the Catachan Jungle Fighters and as you can see, the miniatures look brilliant when compared to their classic paint jobs from back in the day.
I love seeing those old miniatures, chipped and battered and painted up to be "cool" with blood, dirt and grime on show. I also appreciate that TrojanTurps had a pop at camo back in the day and also that classic Flesh Wash! You have to think that back in the day, these would have been awesome.
The updated paint schemes also look brilliant and I like that TrojanTurps has picked out the skin once again to give it a bit more life. Less tanning oil is used on these troopers. Added to that, all of the miniatures have been touched up in different ways, from the basing up. You've also got that dirty white used throughout, which helps to bring the focus back to the miniatures and draw the eye. It also helps to break up the camouflage and such throughout, rather than it all being green.
Voidfighters by ewokkebab
Next up, we're sticking with Sci-Fi and this time exploring what ewokkebab has been doing when it comes to bringing together a force for use in a game of Voidfighter. I should say, right away, that it's insane how much painting ewokkebab gets done. I DREAM of painting this many miniatures quickly!
ewokkebab wanted to play something fun with starships and after venturing into thinking about A Billion Suns, Voidfighters was announced by Osprey Games. This meant that suddenly ewokkebab was onboard and so this was where this project came to life as a bunch of fighters started to get some colours slapped on them.
The idea of this project was, as with a lot of ewokkebab's hobbying, to get these miniatures ready for the tabletop quite quickly. So, a lot of these starships were painted using handy rattlecans, some panel lining and then a nice bit of extra highlighting, shading and weathering work to just make them pop. I think they've come out really nicely and very quickly.
As you can see, the ships came together stupidly quickly and they look brilliant. You've got a good mix of different designs to choose from here for venturing into Voidfighters!
Even with all of those fighters ready to go and the project being essentially complete, ewokkebab has gone to great lengths to point out that more space-based combat is on the horizon. I am eager to see how this all comes together, perhaps into some games of Voidfighter popping up as part of the project system.
Tribal Barbarians by nightrunner
Last but not least, we're diving into a project that I have been following for a while. nightrunner has been working away on painting up some Cimmerian-style Fantasy Barbarians for use with the Mana Press game, Tribal.
The miniatures are going to be used for some brutal skirmishes in the game and have been drawn from the likes of Copplestone, Harlequin, Bronze Age and Reaper. Some stunning miniatures that all work really nicely together and show off some gorgeous, rippling muscles!
Slowly but surely, nightrunner has been working their way through painting a heck of a lot of flesh alongside plenty of fur! I think that the set of figures they chose has come together very well indeed and I love all the attention to detail throughout the collection. Even with different scales and styles involved, the combined basing choice across the range helps to tie it all together.
I like that the heroes are also elevated to have some major foot-on-rock energy going on, setting them apart from the rest of the rank and file and making them easily identifiable on the tabletop. As it stands, nightrunner is going to be adding some Barbarian Cavalry into the mix, followed by someone for the Barbarians from Cimmeria to fight against! The Picts are coming and I am eager to see how they shape up.
