So I was trying to think of an Indie game I enjoy playing but then I thought does this whole Indie game thing only relate to Fantasy and Scifi or is an Indie historical game anything that isn’t ummm … No can’t think of anything, not sure if such a thing exists. Its still way too early for this sort of thinking.
I think that Primal and Primeval, that were mentioned, are two that could check the box of indie historical. Does the indie need to be outside large companies and miniature ambivalent? Perhaps SAGA, for example, could be another of indie historical as its just tied down with Age books for lists and no official lines of minis.
Perhaps the open creativity of the indie moniker also is tied into the kitbash element and, unless you’re the Perrys or otherwise so blessed in skill, the sculpting of unique and truly historically accurate figures is a depth few are willing/able to pursue.
My thoughts for historical games was Indie from what?
Independent from share holders and hedge funds. So anything outside of wahlud, battlefront, hasbro, gw, those massive juggernauts. Most historic rulesets and ranges are indies.
All games are miniature athestic
First .
The wonderful weirdness of the Weald, awesome for kitbashing. The open-ended nature of a “miniatures ambivalent” system is great to hear about. Pretty much having the Order of Humanity and the Chaos of Corruption makes it easy to work on a faction build. Glad to have this in the spotlight again and get more detail.
Yeah – I am so onboard for using some of my Warhammer stuff to do something perfectly weird and wonderful for The Weald
@john you could have a look at the Battlefield Helios range at http://www.vanguardminiatures.co.ul for some nice proxy ships. I’m sure the there woukd massive amount of BFG ships out there via 3D printing
…and on that day, John ended up spending all of his money
No, he won’t because the URL is faulty. But if someone was to be so cruel as to put in a direct link to the Space Ship Battles category that might happen.
BTW it’s “Battlegroup Helios”.

Enjoy @johnlyons 8)
@johnlyons Apologies for the inconvenience but my assistant was due his 6 monthly aptitude test which consisted of him spotting the deliberate mistakes I made in the original post, which I’m pleased to say he has now passed
I’m not sure where the ‘independent’ l I need actually lies, but i would definitely say I’m getting more enthused for ‘smaller’ wargames than ever before. The Osprey published rulesets for example. For me, the play experience improves as the distance from corporate or business driven interests increases.
The weald looks interesting. Might have a look at using some of my Turnip28 minis for it. I think john was right about the lack of creativity in GW now. Back in the day the eavy metal pages of white dwarf were full of inspirational conversions and paint jobs. I doubt that’s still the case
I mean, it’d be rude not to download the kids rules and cajole the tinier headbones into spending some of their summer holiday exploring The Rot.
my work here is done
HappySunday……
Happy Sunday.
The Weald would be a perfect game to use the Wealdgeist miniatures from Conquest Games.
Good morning everyone
If you don’t know them how am I supposed to know them! I’m here for you to tell me about them! XD
Indie games are not the heart of the hobby. They are the soul. Hearts keep things going because it’s pushed to a broad audience. So the heart (rotten and decayed as it might be in places) are companies like G’Wullu, Waaaghlaaad, Has-bros and all those big boys.
@brennon I think what you guys haven’t discussed recently, are the OOP games that are indie adjacent built from a set of rules, like BFG for instance is still around online and a fairly old one is FASA Starship Tactical Combat Simulator which your very own Oriskany still plays occassioanlly, so not just last 20 yrs but games from 40 ys ago that have a Forum/Facebook/Youtube presence that keeps them current (and free my faourite price), and folks still doing new material or rules revisions.
Star Wars Miniatures Battles on D6 Holocron is another, so maybe that’s something to discuss in an XLBS.
That would be a good idea – having a look at older games beyond just the BIG ones like Mordheim etc and diving in and talking about who is supporting them etc.
Thanks!
