Community Spotlight: Terrain, Building Rome & Pleasing Organisation!
September 17, 2025 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Terrain by dolgath
We start off this week's Community Spotlight where we're checking out the work by dolgath on a range of different terrain projects that they have been tinkering with for the last while. We start with something fun and Sci-Fi as we go into space and check out some excellent asteroids!
This little collection of terrain represents some asteroids as well as one with a beacon on it and another designed as a base of operations. The thinking is that this is a mining operation that has been taken over by pirates. A bunch of the bitz used to make these came from the Dropfleet range and a selection of options from the Resistance, UCM and Space Station sets. They look great!
We also had a bit of trash that got turned into excellent-looking terrain for larger-scale games around the 28mm and 32mm level.
This is the kind of classic scratch-built terrain that you'd expect to be popping up as part of a terrain collection for the likes of Warhammer 40,000, Necromunda and beyond. It's great how some old bottles and a bit of ingenuity can end up making for some excellent terrain that will certainly look the part once the undercoat has been applied. I like that a lot of the terrain has access points as well, so you can use them to get a vantage point!
Lastly, we have your classic ruins!
This terrain has been designed so that dolgath can convince their friends to dive into a bit of Warhammer 40,000. Whilst the first experiment didn't go well, they are going to be diving back in and trying other editions of the game to see if it will sit well with the group. This means that some terrain was needed and so scratch building was required in order to make that a reality. It looks great.
If nothing else, dolgath gets to enjoy "Gaming & Grilling" once a month so that means they get some good food out of it!
Building Rome by ewokkebab
Next up, we're sticking with terrain but someone who has decided to take up the mantle dropped by Lloyd. Gerry had tried but the pleading had fallen on deaf ears. Now, ewokkebab has decided to just dive in and get painting up a range of terrain to represent the streets of Rome, where his gangs will be battling it out for control of the levers of power.
ewokkebab has already started on getting a number of buildings printed and primed for use in their games of Gangs of Rome. The terrain came from Dark Realms Forge and the initial stages of painting the miniatures were done with a mixture of Wraithbone for the basis of the buildings, followed by Peachy Peach from Colour Forge. They already look great and with a wash, that could be enough, to be honest!
However, not one to be done and dusted, ewokkebab has been adding some more colour to these terrain pieces and turning them into an excellent set of terrain for lining the streets of Rome. A bit more printing has resulted in some more buildings, as you can see here and we're getting some more of those excellent, poppy colours that would have been present on old Roman buildings.
ewokkebab is also working on some miniatures to play games of Gangs of Rome with as well. Here, you can see some of the figures from Wargames Atlantic which have been mounted on appropriate cobblestone bases to represent the streets of Rome.
I really like ewokkebab' vibe of "let's get it done", and I think it will be great to see where he goes with this project in the future. I can't wait to see the finished buildings and those gang members running around trying to stab each other in the back!
Perfect Organisation by gorram
Last but not least, we have something a bit left field. All of us have a pile of potential but very few of us have actually managed to organise it and turn it into something that would actually be helpful when it comes to hobby from week to week! That's when I was particularly taken by gorram's very, very organised pile of potential.
Whilst this, in essence, doesn't actually show any painting what this does show is how a tidy space and a tidy collection could then end up turning into productive hobbying in the future. If you know where everything is and you have a sense of what's next for you to work on, you're more likely to actually do it!
As gorram has said, actually organising the collection can be quite the challenge, especially when inside a small living space. So, gorram has really made the most of what space they have and come up with great ways to store their collection of miniatures as well as their hobby supplies and even terrain.
This has resulted in a perfectly acceptable amount of Really Useful Boxes being employed to make sure that everything has got it's place amongst the collection and on the shelves. The addition of the labels on the side is a real bonus I think and should help later on down the line. I think Lloyd would be proud.
Now, everything has a place and there is a place for everything. I really do believe that I manage to get more done when I have a relatively tidy hobby desk and everything else has been placed somewhere where I can easily find it, should I just look through some boxes. Terrain can be a real pain in the arse but I think that gorram has done a great job of sorting that out too. A pile of potential that has potential!
