Community Spotlight: Sad Elves, Weird ‘Nam & Backdrops For Photography!
September 24, 2025 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Iyanden Aeldari by collins
We start off this week's Community Spotlight with some work by collins who is still powering through their Combat Patrols for Warhammer 40,000. Recently, they painted up some great miniatures for my favourite of the Aeldari Craftworlds, Iyanden. I love these sad elves with a love for their ghostly wraith constructs!
The paint scheme for this take on the Iyanden Aeldari was inspired by grantinvanman’s Craftworld Iyanden commission project, using a basis of Colour Forge Desert Sand Spray to do a lot of the heavy lifting. I think the yellow looks brilliant and the darker blue works really well to help elevate the scheme.
I think the miniature goes to the next level with the way that the white has been handled so nicely. I struggle to get white looking that good and I have often just defaulted to Rakarth Flesh or Wraithbone rather than a pure white! It works really well and gives a brilliant final look to the Farseer in this case.
This then carries through into the classic Guardians, the workhorses of an Iyanden army.
The highlights on these, chunky as they are, really suit the heroic nature of Warhammer 40,000 and from a gamer's eye perspective, they are going to work so well as a mass when they land on the tabletop. I appreciate taking the extra time it took to do the white face masks as well here, since that's something I completely skipped with my own Iyanden force. I also think that the darker basing for the miniatures works very well to spotlight the miniatures and make them the focal point.
Black Sun Weird 'Nam by bobcockayne
Next up, we're going to be moving away from the Sci-Fi of the Grimdark future and Warhammer 40,000 and stepping back into the jungles of Vietnam. bobcockayne is looking to dive into the world of Black Sun by Crucible Crush and bring to life some Weird 'Nam on the tabletop. It's not just the Viet Cong in the treeline.
As with many ideas, when it comes to wargamers, this sprang out of watching a movie and therefore it has become the thing. In this case, bobcockayne was watching Kong: Skull Island and was inspired to dive back into their collection and build up a range of miniatures to use when playing out Black Sun. That means some surly action movie heroes.
For example, the Predator crew has clearly been hired to head into the jungle and hunt down some monsters. bobcockayne has done a great job on bringing these heroes to life, playing around with Constrast paints and such in order to get the camouflage looking superb. I particularly like that bobcockayne also took the time to paint the eyes!
Rubicon Models then provided the Viet Cong, who might be enemies and possibly allies depending on what enemies end up coming your way!
Again, bobcockayne has done a brilliant job on painting up these miniatures and I like that they have come together so incredibly quickly. I am also a massive fan of the basing that bobcockayne has done here, really giving the feel of a jungle setting. You also get a good mixture of both male and female fighters for the Viet Cong from Rubicon which is a nice bonus.
It wouldn't be Weird 'Nam without some monsters and bobcockayne has also been getting a look at those thanks to Wargames Atlantic and their Lizardmen. You can already feel the latex suits squeaking their way onto set.
Again, these look great and should be fun to see running around on a cool jungle map with the rest of the miniatures from this collection. It should be noted that the core of this little collection will actually be the ANZAC who are going to be bearing the brunt of the brutality when faced by all sorts of eldritch horrors.
You can dive back into the project on the link above and see what else bobcockayne has been doing. I can't wait to see where bobcockayne goes with this and the games that get played.
Miniature Photography Backdrops by Frugalmax
Last but not least, we have a look at more brilliant work from Frugalmax who has been putting together some more hobby videos showing off some cheap and cheerful ways to create more fun stuff for the hobby. In this case, Frugalmax and the clan from the Cheap Dragon Show are showing you how to paint up a backdrop for your miniature photography.
Setting up a nice backdrop for your miniatures can really add to the fun when you're actually taking photos of your miniatures. Having the terrain in there helps a lot and then levelling that up with a backdrop is a no-brainer. You could get some backdrop books but there's something fun about painting a specific scene that you can use for a lot of different miniatures.
What's even better is that Frugalmax has actually put together some brilliant videos that show off the process of bringing something like this to life...
Cheap Backgrounds or GM Screens (Featuring Mossy Bob)
The Full Mossy (An Unabridged Painting Experience)
These are really fun and definitely worth watching. They get even better with the addition of Mossy Bob helping you dive in and follow the process. A great show to put on in the background whilst you're painting.

Quality projects, smashing work. Love the Eldar nice scheme, the Weirdnam makes me hear “Good Morning Vietnam” in my head when I look at them, and the terrain pieces look brilliant. Congratulations winners
well done!
Three more fantastic buttons. Mossy Bob might be the hobby hero we deserve, he’s certainly not the one I expected.
@gorram, you are a person of deep insight and excellent taste! And I didn’t just read that from a fortune cookie. Mossy Bob shall return! …someday… we think… we’ll see. Cheers!
