Body Horror Tyranids by TrojanTurps

We start this week's Community Spotlight with a look at some of the weird experiments that TrojanTurps has been working on using the miniatures from the grimdark future of Warhammer 40,000. Rather than stick to the rules when it comes to the recent Combat Patrol magazines, they have been crafting some very weird but awesome monsters.

Body Horror Tyranids #1 by TrojanTurps

These new Body Horror Tyranids have been kitbashed and converted with a basis in the classic Paul Bonner artwork from yonks ago. This has turned into some very weird and impressive Tyranids who are a little more human in their appearance, which adds to their uncanny nature. This is a brilliant way for someone to take aliens and give them the proper grimdark treatment.

It also gets weirder...

I also think that the painting of these particular miniatures has really levelled up these figures. You can see some great painting in this collection already, which is then elevated by the addition of techniques like shiny varnishes and the addition of plenty of UHU glue slime. It means that even with a basic paint scheme, you can make some absolutely stunning miniatures.

A lot of TrojanTurps' work needs to be seen to be believed and as you delve deeper into some of their strange kitbashes and conversions, you'll see even odder creations that hark back to the twisted, grimdark history of Warhammer.

You need to go and have a look at more of the project via the link above. There are some very strange creations in there, including humanoid "Rippers" and "Squigs" which I can't wait to see painted up and added into the collection. I always enjoy seeing kitbashes and conversions and this takes things to another level, which is awesome.

Turnip28 Bombard by denzien

Next up, we're staying with the weird and the wonderful as denzien adds some more miniatures to their Turnip28 collection. Here, we're seeing some painting on this massive bombard from the artwork of Turnip28. denzien has a 3D printed version of the bombard itself but they have had to help build up the crew that will be manning it.

Turnip28 Bombard #1 by denzien

As with the first project that we looked at this week, this was a great example of kitbashing and converting using a mixture of historical kits and plenty of other Turnip28 bits. There is also another great narrative woven into the sculpt itself, which helps to give some great character to the piece.

It has been designed to represent a Rootling who has been messing around on the top of the gun. The crew are then trying to get him off whilst the officer gives some orders from behind. I think it looks great and makes your collection more enticing for anyone viewing it.

Turnip28 Bombard #3 by denzien

This isn't the only one of the war machines from Turnip28 that we've seen as part of this project. You can go and see more from denzien on the link above, all of which might end up being inspiration for your own collections.

Trench Crusade by horus500

Last but not least, we're looking at some work by horus500, who recently watched a demo for Trench Crusade and got enticed into painting more miniatures thanks to a donated free set of miniatures to represent New Antioch. Even with lots of other miniatures to paint, horus500 got stuck into the challenge.

Trench Crusade #1 by horus500

What I really like about the painting here from horus500 is that they haven't gone down the route of painting all of these miniatures in grim, dark, muddy, dirty colours. Instead, we've got some really awesome poppy colours that draw the eye to all of the details present within these figures. I think these nail the theme of Trench Crusade but without just resorting to an "easy" finish.

Trench Crusade #2 by horus500

The Trench Crusade miniatures also really appeal to folks who like doing a bit of experimentation. For example, I like the "bloody, wet flesh" approach that you see here on the miniature above. It works really well and sells the story of the miniature. It also works really nicely with the white armour.

Even the more regular troops, as part of this collection, have been painted up in some nice, brighter, more colourful ways. I also like that the range opens itself up to painting your soldiers in different ways in the style of knights of yore.

Trench Crusade #3 by horus500

This was a really welcome addition to the Trench Crusade canvas that we've been seeing develop over the course of the year. You get loads of fun and interesting figures to play with as part of this range and the creativity continues to surprise me on all fronts.
