Fight The Crimean War With New Black Powder Releases
November 17, 2025 by brennon
"All in the valley of Death, Rode the six hundred". Tennyson’s poem provides the focus for a brand new supplement and a couple of new boxed sets for those wanting to play out the Crimean War in 28mm scale using Black Powder. See what you think of Warlord Games' newest additions to their website.
Into the Valley of Death // Black Powder
We start with the new supplement, Into the Valley of Death, which has been written by Pete Brown. This book covers full details of the armies that fought in the Crimea, including the Russians alongside the alliance of the Ottoman Empire, Britain, France and Sardinia. As well as the ill-fated Charge of the Light Brigade, this campaign also saw even more blunders, featuring poor leadership and use of logistics.
Into the Valley of Death also contains information on the generals that led these armies and a full account of the campaign covering its different battles and skirmishes. This will also include the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava.
The Trooper // Black Powder
This book will also include a free special figure, The Trooper. He is flying a tattered British flag in the face of his foes, seeking to hold the line almost by himself! This miniature was sculpted by Marco Sano and the studio miniature was painted by Jamie Getliffe.
Cimean War Starter Armies
If this has inspired you, there are two Starter Armies for you to choose from. We will start with The Thin Red Line, a British Starter Army for those looking to stick it to the Russians.
The Thin Red Line Set - Crimean War // Black Powder
This set comes with sixty plastic Crimean War British Line Infantry, twelve metal British Line Infantry Command Figures, eight metal Crimean War British Lancers, a metal Crimean War British Royal Artillery 9-pdr Cannon with its crew and a metal British Colonel (mounted).
The Thin Red Line - Miniatures - Crimean War // Black Powder
A great looking army, resplendent in their red, white and gold. Despite the lacklustre tactics of the generals involved in the Crimean War, the average foot soldiers were tough as nails and slogged through some of the worst conditions and battles despite it all.
I like that this comes with a solid core of infantry to hold the line alongside cavalry for the flanks and a cannon to maybe take some potshots at the enemy.
As well as the British, you can also get the Russians and The Russian Bear Starter Army.
The Russian Bear Set - Crimean War // Black Powder
This set comes with seventy-two plastic Crimean War Russian Line Infantry plus nine metal Line Infantry Command Figures, twelve metal Crimean War Russian Lancers, a metal Crimean War Cossack Artillery 6-pdr Cannon with Crew and then finally, a metal Russian Colonel.
The Russian Bear - Miniatures - Crimean War // Black Powder
This follows a similar formula to the British set that we saw first and means that you should have a fairly even match-up if you were going to be putting this army up against the other. Of course, this could also simply be the foundation that you then build on for playing out the various famous skirmishes and battles of the Crimean War.
If you're looking for more Crimean War miniatures, you can find loads of additional sets over on the Warlord Games website HERE.
Could the Crimean War be your way into Black Powder?

The Trooper… so this is what Eddie looked like when he was alive!
He’s begging for a skellibob kitbash…
True. But alas, I have the Iron Maiden minis for Zombicide XD
All of these recent supplements from Warlord Games for Black Powder, Hail Caesar and Pike and Shotte have been excellent, great reads and great period additions to the rules. I will certainly be picking this up, and that is one cracking mini to be included with it.
