Community Spotlight: Spearheads, Moonstone Heroes & Trench Crusade
August 20, 2025 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Spearhead by panzerkaput
We start off this week's Community Spotlight looking at some of the accumulated work of panzerkaput who has fallen hard for Warhammer Age of Sigmar and the Spearhead gamemode. This has led them to not just paint one or two Spearheads but sixteen! Here are just some of the Spearhead armies they have painted.
For those who aren't aware, Spearhead is akin to Combat Patrol from Warhammer 40,000 but a fully functioning game that also happens to be balanced. Games are played on a small board with pre-determined armies that you build out of the box. Each faction in Warhammer Age of Sigmar has one and with the Core Rules being free (as well as the Spearhead rules for each faction), all you need really is one of the Spearhead sets with their cards and terrain and you're ready to play the game.
What Spearhead also means is that you can very quickly expand and add new armies for different factions, dipping your toe into one faction as another starts to become a task to paint. It's quite addictive. As you can see, panzerkaput has found themselves working on sixteen of them and a seventeenth is in the works as well. I think panzerkaput's work looks fantastic and I love how varied and interesting each of the Spearheads in their collection look.
What's also nice is that this was also where panzerkaput came to love the use of Contrast paints. As they say in the project, they blend, wash, shade and work as base paints all in one game and it means that you can have full armies (as you can see here) painted stupidly quickly and looking gorgeous. As with all tools, once you learn how to use them and understand their qualities, they become incredible.
I have picked just three of panzerkaput's Spearheads here but there are some more gorgeous ones to have a look at over on the Project link above. I like the look of the Stormcast Eternals but I should also note that panzerkaput's photography is also lovely, especially when using those backdrops from Handiwork Games.
Moonstone by paulgbarnes
Next up, we're turning our attention to paulgbarnes, who has been painting up more of their Moonstone miniatures. They have recently been concentrating on painting up the Commonwealth Humans from their collection and they are looking wonderful.
All of the figures from Moonstone are packed full of character and this means that when you paint them, you get to draw out that charm. Kauffman (above) looks excellent and I really like the work on the inside of the cloak. I think the contrast between the darker and lighter colours is wonderful and I like that you can get a real sense of the character from the painting.
The same goes for Brunhilde, where I like that paulgbarnes' work on the painting has helped to bring out the character in the sculpt.
The metallics look particularly nice and I enjoy that paulgbarnes went that extra step and did some of the tattoo work on her arm. I think the work on her skin is particularly good and I like that there's plenty of muscle definition showing through and you can see every little line on her face. The little micro-brush marks on the clothing helps to mimic the look of fabric as well which is a skill I've yet to master.
All of the humans for the Commonwealth are now done and that means that hopefully paulgbarnes will get to step into some games with a host of new characters soon. According to them, there will be some Gnomes soon joining the rest of the Commonwealth and I am eager to see how they look.
Trench Crusade by hutch
Last but not least, we're checking out some Trench Crusade from hutch. This has been a great excuse for them to dive in and paint some miniatures for Trench Crusade but also an excuse for hutch to make some terrain.
The initial faction that hutch has gone for is the Trench Pilgrims with their nuns and pilgrims charging across the battlefields of Trench Crusade with piety as their shield. I think hutch has properly nailed the Grimdark, Horror feel of Trench Crusade, especially in the Stigmatic Nun above who finds herself drenched in blood. I think that works really well and matches so well with the artwork.
What was quite interesting is that hutch has been finding this fun but also they are beginning to feel the pull of different factions. I think the work on the Trench Pilgrims is great and I like that hutch has gone for more metallics alongside warmer reds and blues rather than the earthy tones that you see amongst a lot of the artwork and other miniatures.
hutch is already considering diving into the Sultanate and the Heretic Legions and I hope that we're going to be seeing more of them as the project grows. This has also been an excuse for hutch to build some terrain which all of the miniatures have been photographed in.
I love the look of these big tumbling ruins that could well have been part of a larger settlement before the war began. We see a lot of trenches, muddy battlefields and barbed wire but I like that hutch thought outside the box and wanted to take these soldiers to a different battlefield. If you'd love to see more from this Mud and Messiahs project, you can check it all out on the link above.

Well done to this week’s Buttoneers. Very inspiring stuff.
Great work all 😀
Thanks very much for the button. My work pails in comparison to those other mighty button winners both of whom’s brushwork is utterly stunning.
Thanks for the compliments – after watching it on the weekend I did find it ironic as I always hate painting faces and think it is the worst part of the paint job.
Fantastic projects – all well deserved!!!
