W1815 in Miniature by HobbyBrush

We start with HobbyBrush who has been looking at turning W1815, HobbyBrush's favourite Napoleonic game, into a miniatures-based game rather than the blocks that you might see in the original game. To that end, Baccus has been hit up and there are some great figures coming together to represent the armies used in the game.

As mentioned in the project, W1815 is a quick and easy game that delivers a tactical battle in a small package. But, since HobbyBrush is a miniatures guy, they wanted to take things to the next level and so picked up some 6mm miniatures to use in place of the wooden blocks that would be representing the troops on the tabletop.

Some friends are going to be working on the British side of this particular conflict in 6mm and so HobbyBrush has taken up the task of working on the French. All of the figures are from Baccus alongside the paper flags. This is also a test of how the basing works for these miniatures and you'll notice that a few are missing bushes which will help to complete the look.

As if that wasn't cool enough, HobbyBrush is also working on a board that will replace the standard map that W1815 would be played on.

Foamboard has been used as the basis for this project as it is nice and easy to work with. Roads have been marked out alongside where the settlements are going to be located. You'll also note that the different elevations have been carved out so you can get a more realistic look at the landscape that you'll be fighting over.

Marble Golem by danlee

Next up, we're having a look at what danlee has been working on. They recently painted up an excellent miniature for a painting competition. They had a Stone Golem to work on and decided to try out a Marble Golem instead, using some neat effects.

Marble Golem #1 by danlee

This miniature has been based on some reference pictures of marble and then brought to life with careful use of colour here and there to give that excellent marble effect. Marble comes in all sorts of different colours and I like that danlee has taken the time to subtly work in the different shades here and there alongside those deep veins that really finish off the effect.

Marble Golem #2 by danlee

danlee has put together a nice breakdown of the process in their project, which could be helpful to follow. More work-in-progress photos are going to be introduced into the mix soon to show how it was done step-by-step. I think this would be excellent on a whole host of different creatures in this style, perhaps with different core colours.

I think that the marble look for the Golem is then heightened by the nice application of 'Ardcoat gloss at the end, which gives this its shimmery quality. I am also a fan of the Reikland Fleshshade used over the metal areas to make them that little bit richer and deeper. It works very well.

Ork Craboids by scribbs

Last but not least, we're having a look at some of the work by scribbs, who has been doing a great job painting up some Oldhammer and retro-themed Space Orks from the master, Kev Adams and Meridian Miniatures.

Ork Craboids #1 by scribbs

These miniatures look great and I like how scribbs has nailed that old-school look to these Ork Craboids. The bold colours, harsh highlighting and shading and the classic basing work very nicely. They are something of an oddity from the old days of Warhammer 40,000, given new life as part of this collection. Who wouldn't want a hybrid Ork who has had a run-in with a Tyranid?

Ork Craboids #2 by scribbs

As scribbs has mentioned, it was great fun working with the painting style for these miniatures. They had some fun working on the skin patterning and colouration of both the Orks and their hybrid parts. I like the addition of more blue and purple shades being worked into the miniature as a whole.

I think the addition of the bright pink into the mix really helps with the Oldhammer vibe. This does make me miss those older miniatures from the Warhammer range. Some of the miniatures we have now are gorgeous but there's something so characterful about this old style of miniature that continues to tick boxes. Ah, nostalgia!
