phaidknott I probably count myself as "one who buggers about with rules" but its always been in the same group of friends. I normally play RAW, but only tend to tweak things when I see a player playing within the bounds of RAW but seems to enjoy trying to break the game from within the bounds of the RAW ruleset. RAW is important for the tourney scene, and for many players who live outside the area of a local gaming group this scene is the only chance they get to play. Usually its still a friendly set of games and fun had by all. But to me the major bane is the rulesmith who tries for every possible advantage, yet doesn't care if the tactics involved basically break the game. Examples go from the old Challenger 2000 world championships where tanks were jammed together in a long Napoleonic line so that only the end tanks exposed their flank armour (not seen that tactic on any armoured engagement in real life) up to this prime example. http://imgur.com/a/V0gND Its this kind of thing where RAW sometimes shoots itself in the foot. At the end of the day, its all about gaming and having FUN. I think tournies should actually have a "Gentleman Player" award for players who their opponents find the mist fun to play. At the end of the day, its this we need to be striving for....not to be the most successful player, but the player that others want to play against. RAW or tweaking, you'll never get a right answer on the internet. The right answer is what works for you and your usual band of opponents 🙂
